Apple iPhone 17 Pro First Impressions: the camera is the upgrade, and Cosmic Orange is the statement

Apple iPhone 17 Pro

The iPhone 17 Pro is the phone for the buyer who looked at the standard iPhone 17, liked almost everything about it, and still wanted the camera system Apple keeps for the Pro line. It went on sale in India on 19 September 2025, from Rs 1,34,900 for 256GB (512GB Rs 1,54,900; 1TB Rs 1,74,900), in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver. First impressions from Apple’s official specifications — we have not hands-on tested the phone.

  • If you shoot concerts or anything you cannot walk closer to, this is the Rs 52,000 question, and the telephoto is most of the answer.

The camera is the whole argument

All three rear cameras are now 48MP, and that is the decision Apple is asking you to pay for. The Fusion main camera is 48MP at f/1.78 with sensor-shift stabilisation, the ultra-wide is 48MP at f/2.2, and the telephoto is 48MP at f/2.8 with 4x optical zoom and what Apple calls 8x optical-quality zoom, with digital zoom up to 40x. The previous Pro used a 12MP 5x telephoto; the trade here is less raw reach for far more detail at the magnifications people actually use.

The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage sensor at f/1.9 with autofocus and Dual Capture, recording front and rear at once. Video stays a Pro strength: 4K Dolby Vision up to 120fps, plus ProRes and Log for anyone editing afterwards. None of this is on the standard iPhone 17, which has two rear cameras and no telephoto. If you shoot concerts or anything you cannot walk closer to, this is the Rs 52,000 question, and the telephoto is most of the answer.

The body finally changed

After years of titanium, the 17 Pro moves to a heat-forged aluminium unibody with a vapour chamber inside, which Apple says spreads heat from the A19 Pro chip more evenly under sustained load. The A19 Pro is a 3nm chip with 12GB of RAM, paired with Apple’s C1X modem and N1 wireless chip. The 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display keeps ProMotion up to 120Hz, now peaks at 3,000 nits outdoors, and is protected by Ceramic Shield 2. The phone is 206g, 8.75mm thick, and rated IP68.

Cosmic Orange is the first Pro launch colour in years that is genuinely loud rather than a muted metal — recognisable from across a room, which will not suit everyone.

Battery and charging, honestly

Apple’s India specifications rate the iPhone 17 Pro at up to 31 hours of video playback, and up to 28 hours streamed — a big step up from the 27 hours of the 16 Pro. The US figure is higher, at 33 hours, because US models have no SIM tray and a slightly larger battery; 31 hours is the figure for the Indian model. Fast charging reaches 50 percent in around 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher, which is sold separately, and wireless charging goes up to 25W with MagSafe. Those are Apple’s lab figures, not a promise about your working day — but this is the longest-lasting small Pro Apple has made.

Pros

  • A triple 48MP camera system with a genuinely useful 4x telephoto — the clearest reason to choose this over the standard iPhone 17
  • The aluminium unibody with vapour-chamber cooling should keep the A19 Pro cooler under sustained use than the old design
  • Up to 31 hours of video playback on the Indian model, with 50 percent charge in around 20 minutes on a 40W adapter

Cons

  • Rs 1,34,900 is Rs 52,000 more than the standard iPhone 17, and most of that premium buys the camera system
  • The 40W fast charger is not in the box, and neither is a charger of any kind
  • At 206g and 8.75mm it is heavier and thicker than the standard iPhone 17, for the same screen size

CompareIdea verdict

Buy the iPhone 17 Pro if the camera is the reason you are spending this much — specifically the 48MP telephoto and the video tools around it. If you mostly shoot with the main camera and rarely zoom, the standard iPhone 17 at Rs 82,900 gives you the same screen size and the same 120Hz display for Rs 52,000 less. The Pro is the photographer’s iPhone this year, more than ever, and it makes no apology for it.
