Apple iPhone 17 First Impressions: the everyday iPhone, made brighter and tougher

Our verdict: The Apple iPhone 17 is the most complete everyday iPhone in years. It improves the screen, the cameras and the battery, without pushing buyers toward a Pro price. On paper, this is the sensible default iPhone.

These are first impressions from Apple’s official specifications for the Apple iPhone 17, not a hands-on review. We have not tested the phone yet, so we are not giving it a score.

Apple iPhone 17 display and design

The Apple iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, an Always-On display and Dynamic Island. Apple lists 1,000 nits typical brightness, 1,600 nits peak for HDR and 3,000 nits peak outdoors, at 2622 by 1206 resolution.

Design is aluminium, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and a colour-infused glass back in most finishes. Colours are Black, White, Mist Blue, Sage and Lavender. It measures 149.6 mm tall, 71.5 mm wide and 7.95 mm thick, and is rated IP68 to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions.

Apple iPhone 17 performance and software

Power comes from the A19 chip, with a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a 16-core Neural Engine, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing. That should handle everyday apps, photo processing and Apple Intelligence features comfortably for years. Connectivity includes 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and NFC, with dual SIM through nano-SIM and eSIM.

The phone runs iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features, subject to language and regional availability. It shares the software platform of Apple’s newer Pro phones, so daily use should not feel cut down. Our Apple iPhone 17 vs iPhone 18 Pro comparison sets out what Pro money actually buys.

Apple iPhone 17 cameras

The rear system is a 48MP Dual Fusion camera: a 48MP Fusion Main camera at 26 mm, f/1.6, with sensor-shift stabilisation, and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera at 13 mm, f/2.2, with a 120-degree field of view. The Main camera also enables a 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto, with digital zoom up to 10x. Video reaches 4K Dolby Vision at 60 frames per second, with Cinematic mode, Action mode and Dual Capture.

At the front, the 18MP Center Stage camera has an f/1.9 aperture, autofocus, and tap to zoom and rotate, with Centre Stage for photos and calls, ultra-stabilised video and Dual Capture. For selfies and calls, that front camera may be the bigger upgrade. Real-world colour and low-light quality still need hands-on testing.

Apple iPhone 17 battery, charging and price in India

Apple rates video playback at up to 30 hours, and up to 27 hours streamed. Fast charging reaches up to 50 percent in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher, or up to 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 30W adapter or higher and a MagSafe charger. The box contains the iPhone 17 and a USB-C cable only — no power adapter or EarPods.

Apple India lists the Apple iPhone 17 from ₹99,900 for 256GB, with 512GB at ₹1,24,900, as listed on Apple India on 4 November 2026. Those are maximum retail prices inclusive of taxes.

Pros

• Brighter 120Hz Super Retina XDR display with Always-On and Dynamic Island
• 48MP Dual Fusion rear cameras plus an 18MP Center Stage front camera
• A19 performance, Wi-Fi 7, 5G and a long software runway
• IP68 resistance, Ceramic Shield 2 and a clear official India price

Cons

• No power adapter in the box
• No dedicated telephoto lens beyond the 2x crop
• Storage starts at 256GB, pushing heavy shooters toward 512GB
• Camera quality in real light still needs hands-on testing

Verdict

The Apple iPhone 17 reads like the right iPhone for most people: a brighter, smoother screen, a stronger camera system front and back, and modern performance, without the Pro premium. For everyone else, this is the iPhone to shortlist first. See also our Google Pixel 11 First Impressions and Karbonn Rebel Pro First Impressions.
