Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch (M6) First Impressions: faster chip, same great laptop, in stores tomorrow

Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch (M6)

First Impressions — based on Apple’s official specifications and launch announcement. No hands-on testing yet.

Our verdict: The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 is not a redesign: it is the same excellent laptop with a faster chip, a brighter screen, and battery life that is now best in class for this size. If you were already going to buy a 14-inch MacBook Pro, this is simply the one to buy. If you already own an M4 Pro model, there is no reason to upgrade.

What is new

  • M6 chip: Apple’s M6 is a 10-core CPU (six performance and four efficiency cores) with a 10-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine.
  • Brighter screen: the 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display now reaches 1,600 nits peak brightness, up from 1,000 nits — better outdoors, with the same 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate.
  • Longer battery: up to 24 hours of video playback, up from 20 hours.
  • Faster memory: memory bandwidth is up to 25% faster.
  • Faster charging: 96W charging is now included in the box.

What has not changed

  • Design: the same 14.2-inch aluminium body, the same 0.61-inch thickness, and the same 1.55 kg weight.
  • Ports: three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack.
  • Keyboard and trackpad: the same Magic Keyboard and large Force Touch trackpad.
  • Webcam: the same 12MP Centre Stage camera.
  • Base specs: 16GB unified memory and 512GB storage.

Price and availability

It is priced at Rs 2,39,900 in India, and it will be in stores on 6 November 2026. The base model has 16GB unified memory and 512GB storage. Apple will offer a configuration with 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage for Rs 2,79,900.

Who should buy it

  • If you have an M1 or M2 MacBook Pro: this is a big upgrade — the M6 is much faster, the screen is brighter, and the battery lasts much longer.
  • If you have an M4 Pro: do not upgrade — the M6 is faster, but not by enough to justify the cost, and the design is the same.
  • If you are buying your first MacBook Pro: this is the one to buy — it is the best 14-inch laptop you can buy today, with the best battery life of any 14-inch laptop we know of.
  • If you want the best 14-inch laptop for video editing: this is the strongest choice at this size — the M6 is powerful enough for most video editing, and the screen is excellent for colour work.

What we would still like to know

  • Real-world battery life: Apple’s 24-hour claim is for video playback — we need to see how long it lasts in real use.
  • Sustained performance: the M6 is faster on paper, but we need to see how it holds up under sustained load.
  • Display: the brighter screen is welcome, but we need to see how it looks in real use.
  • Value: at Rs 2,39,900, it is expensive — we need to see if it is worth the price.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Faster M6 chip
  • Brighter 1,600-nit display
  • Best-in-class battery life — up to 24 hours
  • 96W charger in the box
  • Same excellent design, ports and keyboard

Cons

  • Same design — no new look
  • Expensive at Rs 2,39,900
  • Not a big enough upgrade for M4 Pro owners
  • Base model still has 16GB memory and 512GB storage

Our verdict

The M6 MacBook Pro is the best 14-inch laptop you can buy today. There is nothing about it that feels like a compromise, and it is the strongest choice at this size, with the best battery life of any 14-inch laptop we know of.

If you need a new laptop today, buy it. It is the best 14-inch laptop you can buy today. If you already own an M4 Pro model, wait for the next one — the M6 is not a big enough step up for you.

We will update this review after we have tested the machine in our own hands.
