Apple’s five new Macs and OLED iPad mini go on sale in the US today — first touchscreen Mac from $2,899

Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch with M6

All five of Apple’s new products go on sale in the US today, Friday 6 November — at Apple Stores, on apple.com and through authorised resellers. Pre-orders opened on 28 October, and the first pre-orders reach customers today.

At a glance

  • The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the PROLED XDR Display starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, both with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, a tandem OLED touchscreen, a Dynamic Island and the glowing Apple logo back on the lid.
  • The MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 — $900 less than the touchscreen model — and it has the newer chip: a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, with up to 24 hours of battery life on Apple’s claim.

The headline is the one Apple resisted for decades: its first touchscreen Mac. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the PROLED XDR Display starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, both with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, a tandem OLED touchscreen, a Dynamic Island and the glowing Apple logo back on the lid. One warning if you want one today: online orders for the touchscreen models are already shipping in two to three weeks, so checking a nearby store’s pickup stock first is the faster route.

The better-value MacBook Pro is the other 14-inch model. The MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 — $900 less than the touchscreen model — and it has the newer chip: a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, with up to 24 hours of battery life on Apple’s claim. It keeps the conventional Liquid Retina XDR display, with no touch and no Dynamic Island. For most buyers that is the right trade: the newer chip and the lower price, without paying for a screen feature they may rarely use.

The cheapest way into the launch is the OLED iPad mini, from $699 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model. It is the first iPad mini with an OLED display — an 8.5-inch panel — and it gains the A20 Pro chip and an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, a first for the line. The 256GB model is $799 and the 512GB is $999; Wi-Fi + Cellular starts at $849.

The 24-inch iMac with M6, from $1,499, keeps its 4.5K Retina display and seven-colour range and adds the M6 chip, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and a 12MP camera.

CompareIdea’s take: if the touchscreen is what you have been waiting for, go to a store today rather than joining the online queue. If you want the best 14-inch MacBook for the money, the M6 model at $1,999 is the buy. And the OLED iPad mini at $699 is the most interesting of the five for everyone else — the smallest OLED iPad Apple has made, and the cheapest.
