PS5 Pro vs Xbox Series X vs Nintendo Switch 2: The $900 Question, Answered

By Merry
At a glance
- PlayStation 5 Pro (2TB) — $899.99 at Best Buy.
- Xbox Series X (1TB, Disc) — $799.99 at Best Buy.
The verdict, first: buy the Xbox Series X. This comparison has a wrinkle the spec sheets don’t show: the most powerful console here is the one you can’t buy. So the real choice is between the two you can — and on that choice, the Series X wins for most buyers.

The sold-out problem
The PS5 Pro is the headline act of this comparison and the one you cannot buy. At $899.99, the 2TB Pro is sold out at Best Buy, and a recommendation to buy a console that is not in stock is not much of a recommendation. If the Pro is the one you want, watch Best Buy for a restock rather than paying a resale listing that asks more than the list price. Everyone else should shop among the two consoles that are actually available — which is where this comparison gets interesting.
What the extra money buys
The price ladder is steep: $400 separates the Switch 2 from the Pro, and $300 separates it from the Series X. The Pro’s money buys the most powerful PlayStation hardware yet — enhanced graphics with AI-driven upscaling — and 2TB of storage, double the Series X and eight times the Switch 2. The Series X gives you a 1TB disc drive console that plays games in 4K, plus Game Pass for a steady flow of new titles. The Switch 2 gives you something neither of the others can: a console that is also a handheld, with Nintendo’s exclusives and 256GB of built-in storage. Each step up the ladder buys real capability — the question is whether you will use it.
Who each one is for
The PS5 Pro is for the PlayStation enthusiast who wants the best version of every PlayStation game and is willing to wait for a restock to get it at list price. The Xbox Series X is for most buyers: a living-room console with a disc drive, a deep library, and a price you can pay today. The Switch 2 is for the player who games on the move, or whose must-play list is Nintendo’s own games — and for anyone buying a second console, it is the cheapest way in.
CompareIdea verdict
Buy the Xbox Series X. It is the console you can actually buy, with a disc drive, 1TB of storage and a library that covers the biggest releases of the year. The trade-off is the Pro’s extra performance and its larger storage — if you already own a PS5, wait for a Pro restock instead of switching platforms. And if handheld play or Nintendo’s games matter most to you, the Switch 2 is the better buy, even though it is the least powerful machine here.
Before you buy
PlayStation 5 Pro: sold out at Best Buy when we checked — availability moves fast, so check the listing before you decide anything. Xbox Series X: confirm the listing is the 1TB Disc edition, the one priced here; the digital-only model is a different listing. Nintendo Switch 2: the 256GB model is the one priced here, and large downloads will fill it quickly, so budget for a microSD Express card if you buy mostly digital.
