GTA 6: Which Console to Buy, What It Costs and How to Get Ready for November 19

GTA 6: Which Console to Buy, What It Costs and How to Get Ready for November 19

The verdict, first: if you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X, buy the game and nothing else — you are already set for launch day. If you are buying a console for GTA 6, target the PS5 Pro at its list price, and buy the Xbox Series X if the Pro stays sold out. The rest of this guide is the prices, the dates and the checks behind that call.

At a glance

  • Standard edition — $79.99.
  • Ultimate edition — $99.99.

What GTA 6 costs

Standard edition — $79.99. Ultimate edition — $99.99. Both on the PlayStation Store, checked 5 November 2026. The Ultimate costs $20 more; check the Store listing for exactly what its extras are before deciding they are worth it.

The PS5 Pro problem

The PS5 Pro is the best console for GTA 6 and the hardest to buy. At $899.99 for the 2TB model at Best Buy, it is sold out ahead of launch. That leaves two options: watch Best Buy for a restock, or buy something else. Do not pay a resale listing more than the list price for a console that will be restocked — the game launches on 19 November whether you own a Pro or not.

If you need a console before November 19

The Xbox Series X plays GTA 6 on day one, and at $799.99 for the 1TB Disc model at Best Buy it is available now — the fallback that costs $100 less than the Pro. A standard PS5 plays it too; check the current Best Buy listing before buying, since its price moves with stock. The Switch 2 does not play GTA 6 — the game launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only — so do not buy one for this game.

The dates that matter

10 November, midnight local time: digital pre-loading opens on PS5, and the pre-load file is up to 212GB — both confirmed by Rockstar. 19 November: launch day, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Between now and then, clear the space, download early, and confirm which edition you bought.

What to check before you pre-order

Edition: Standard or Ultimate? Read the PlayStation Store listing for what each edition includes; the Ultimate costs more, and its extras only matter if you play GTA Online. Disc or digital? The Series X Disc model plays discs; a digital purchase is tied to your account and cannot be resold. Storage: the pre-load alone is up to 212GB, so check your free space before 10 November. Seller: for the Pro, watch Best Buy for a restock; for the Series X, confirm the listing is the 1TB Disc model.

CompareIdea verdict

Buy the game only if you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X. If you are buying a console for GTA 6, target the PS5 Pro at its list price — and if it stays sold out, buy the Xbox Series X instead of waiting: it plays the game on day one, costs less than the Pro, and comes with a disc drive. The trade-off is the Pro’s extra performance and its larger storage. Do not buy a Switch 2 for GTA 6 — it does not play the game.

Before you buy

PlayStation 5 Pro: sold out at Best Buy when we checked — availability moves fast, so check the listing before you decide anything. Xbox Series X: confirm the listing is the 1TB Disc model before ordering. GTA 6 editions: check the PlayStation Store listing for exactly what each edition includes, and remember a digital purchase is tied to your account.
